Your Microphone.
As you already know there are so many microphones available today it can drive one crazy.
Keep this in mind, your microphone pre-amp is actually more important than your microphone in many respects. A microphone pre amp can make an average sounding microphone sound astounding! Remember also that microphones display different colors of sound regarding voice.
Some will complement your voice while others will do nothing at all to give you a nicer sound.
The best thing to do is demo mic preamplifiers and microphones in your own studio environment. You may have to buy it first knowing that you can return it. Just about all literature regarding microphones and mic pre amps all say great things, what you need to do is look for a SHOOTOUT on the internet. This will give you a little more insight before you actually decide to pick up that equipment and install it in your studio.
Tube vs Non Tube- generally that’s for the individual and it depends on the sound you like.
I have found I like the sound of a tube microphone and the advantage should be if it starts to die on you, you just need to send it in and replace the tube and the microphone should be a good as new. I have had three so far and they have sounded great until, the tube started to go.
After sending in for replacement and a checkup, those tube mics never sounded the same.
I don’t know why.
So for Microphones I myself am sticking with non- tube. They sound very good and one day they will bite the dust but generally they have a long life. As for a pre amplifier- that is a maze to go through, I found though that TUBE PREAMPS really do amp up the sound of any microphone you mate it to. I will stick with Tube Pre Amps because they do beautiful things
To the microphone you have. They are generally more robust and the tubes more hearty and last a lot longer.
This, based on my own personal experience.
